" </P><P>The $6-million facility will be constructed in the Bell Grove area and allow the clubs to purchase and store more boats and expand programs. </P><P>"I'm looking forward to a new building where people can come down and do something more than pull a boat out and go in the water, where they can socialize, where committees can meet," said Jim Dickson, chairman of the Aquatic Centre steering committee. </P><P>Organizers are hoping the $1 million from Xstrata and $500,000 from the city is what they need to secure provincial and federal funding. Specifically, they're awaiting a response after making funding applications to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and FedNor. </P><P>If funding falls into place, organizers are planning to break ground by the fall and construct the building by next year. The building itself will blend into the natural surroundings and be constructed using stone and wood on the outside. </P><P>"We can't expand the programs because there's no place to put equipment," Dickson said about the building's current limited capacity. </P><P>"We can't start new programs there's no space to operate from. <DIV>At the World Dragonboat Championships held in Penrith, Australia, Sudbury Canoe Club 

paddlers helped Team Canada claim the most medals of all nations.  In the Senior 

Division (40+) Julie Aleyn helped win 6 gold medals.  In the Grand Masters Division 

(50+), Dave Arnold helped with 4 golds and 1 silver, Bob Brazeau with 4 gold medals, 

Linda McCosham and Norma Fairman with 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze, Filomena Baker with 1 gold 

and 1 bronze, Claudette Ethier with 1 silver, Dan Welch with 6 gold and 1 silver and Leo 

Dupuis with 2 gold medals.  Some of the highlights from the World Championships - 

Julie Aleyn's senior women's team paddled the first sub 2:05 in the 500m by any women's 

team in the world.  In the Grand Masters Division, the men's team paddled a 

1:56 for the 500m, which is the fastest time ever recorded by 

Grand Masters.  In addition the Grand Masters men's team paddled the 

second fastest time over all in all categories for the 2000m race.  Championship 

highlights - the US men's premier team paddled a world record 1:48 in the 500m

The three Sudbury Canoe Club teams are in the top 53 of 250 teams ranked. Team Chiro is currently ranked 4th overall in Canada. The Dragons are ranked 50th and Phoenix is ranked 53rd.</FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>In addition, 9 other Sudbury based teams that participated in the Sudbury festival are ranked in the top 250. Two paddlers will be paddling for the Senior (40+) National Team. In addition, teams from the rest of Canada raced for two wild card spots.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>With its sweep of first-place finishes, SCC Team Chiro earned the chance to represent the Sudbury Canoe Club internationally next year, and won the national competition.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The 2008 Club Crew World Championships will be held in Penang, Malaysia from August 1-3, to coincide with the Beijing Summer Olympics.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>"We headed into the season with the goal of qualifying for Malaysia," said Chiro coach Jeff Walker. "Our first chance was at the Central Canada race off in Toronto in July, where we came <s>second</s> third. Campers aged 7 to 12 spend the day on the docks and in the water&nbsp;learning about paddlesports.&nbsp;The warm ups and gathering activities are held in Bell Park.&nbsp;Vicki, Matt&nbsp;and the YADe volunteers will be welcoming a new set of campers on Tuesday (Aug 7th). The WOD is one of the 6 divisions comprising the CKC (CanoeKayak Canada)&nbsp;Sprint Racing Clubs, with the Eastern Ontario Division&nbsp;making up the rest of&nbsp;Ontario. Competitors attending this weekend come from the Aka-We, Ak-O-Mak, Balmy Beach, Burloak, Lakehead, London, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, Toronto Island, West Rouge, and Chippewas of the Thames First Nation Sprint Racing Canoe Clubs. This is the second year that the Sudbury Canoe Club&nbsp;has formed a&nbsp;blended team with this year's crew having paddlers from&nbsp;Chiro, the Dragons and the newly formed Phoenix team. &nbsp;They continued the winning tradition and won first overall. <br /><a href='http://www.sudburycanoeclub.com/_Files/128304568641241311/stats.jpg'><img src='http://www.sudburycanoeclub.com/_Files/128304568641241311/Thumb/stats_jpg.jpg' style='border: 0px;' /></a><br /><br /><br />]]></description><link>http://www.sudburycanoeclub.com/Default.aspx?id=123</link><pubDate>Wed, 01 Aug 2007 15:47:25 GMT</pubDate> <author>jshirota@gmail.com (Jiro Shirota)</author></item><item><title><![CDATA[Come up with excuses (4 days before the race)]]></title><description><![CDATA[<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Once the race is finished, we often come up with an elaborate&nbsp;list of things we could have done to improve the result.&nbsp; Here are some of the&nbsp;popular excuses used by canoeists and kayakers.&nbsp; (I use them all the time.)&nbsp; The key is to come up with these excuses 4 days before the race, so you can do something about them.&nbsp;&nbsp;We have control over most of these things before the race.</FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><STRONG></STRONG></FONT></DIV><UL><LI><FONT face=Arial size=2><STRONG></STRONG>I was too tired.&nbsp; I stayed up till midnight last night.&nbsp; -&gt;&nbsp; Go to bed early.</FONT></LI><LI><FONT face=Arial size=2>My body is still sore from the workout I had a few days ago.&nbsp; -&gt;&nbsp; Don't work out for at least 3 days before the race.</FONT></LI><LI><FONT face=Arial size=2>I was dehydrated because I didn't drink enough water.&nbsp; -&gt;&nbsp; Drink water.</FONT></LI><LI><FONT face=Arial size=2>My shoulders were tense because I didn't have enough time to warm up.&nbsp; -&gt;&nbsp; Check your race schedule.&nbsp; Give yourself enough time on the water to warm up.</FONT></LI><LI><FONT face=Arial size=2>My footrest wasn't set up correctly.&nbsp; My seat wasn't set up.&nbsp; I couldn't find the right wing nut.&nbsp; -&gt;&nbsp; Don't&nbsp;leave these things till the last minute.</FONT></LI><LI><FONT face=Arial size=2>I had sunscreen on my paddle.&nbsp; My&nbsp;hands were&nbsp;slipping.&nbsp; -&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;You can&nbsp;wash your hands&nbsp;before the race.&nbsp; You can also use tennis racquet grip tape on your paddle.</FONT></LI></UL><DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>If you've ended up with one or more of these excuses after the race, well...&nbsp;you don't need to tell your friends!&nbsp; Instead, you can remember them, so you won't make the same mistake at your next race.&nbsp; Good luck at the WOD Trials!!</FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>

<br /><br />]]></description><link>http://www.sudburycanoeclub.com/Default.aspx?id=117</link><pubDate>Tue, 24 Jul 2007 14:20:11 GMT</pubDate> <author>sudburycanoeclub@on.aibn.com (Sudbury Canoe Club)</author></item><item><title><![CDATA[Canadian Grand Masters Team Trains at the Sudbury Canoe Club]]></title><description><![CDATA[<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>On July 15th the Canadian Grand Masters Team that will be travelling to Australia in September held a training camp at the Sudbury Canoe Club.&nbsp; This team will be representing Canada in the Grand Masters (50+) category at the&nbsp;World Dragon Boat Championships&nbsp;being held in Sydney, Australia.&nbsp; There are eight Sudbury Canoe Club members who are part of the team and will be travelling to Australia in September.&nbsp; The training camp focussed on three elements, technique, race strategy and building team camaraderie.&nbsp; Paddlers hail from Ottawa, Montreal, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Stratford, Parry Sound and outlying areas of the GTA.&nbsp; The paddlers were very impressed with the facilities, equipment, venue and hospitality extended&nbsp;to them.</FONT></DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Plans are in the works to hold future training camps in Sudbury next year.&nbsp; </FONT></DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
